Second Webisode from crested butte. A lot of snow and then the sun came out. Skied some really fun pillow lines and then the wind got to everything. However, this is what we got done.

The Run Around

Last week we finally got things going with our new web-series project. It's called the run around and the link is www.therunaroundblog.com. We will be doing webisodes every few weeks and this is what we came up with last week. The first few days it was stormy, but the last few the sun came out.

Freeskiing World Tour Qualifiers

This past weekend I had the FWT Qualifiers here in Jackson. Things went pretty well. I got third and am pre qualified for the rest of the events. Here is the helmet cam footage from the first day. Snow was a little funny so had to go somewhere that no one had been.

Snowbird day 1

Here is the POV from the snowbird comp this year. I made it to finals but did not ski well. I was on the Salomon Dictators for this run and these skis are so good.

Snowbird

POV from qualifiers from Snowbird. Ended up 10th so I am in for day one. Just qualifiers so kept it pretty mellow with the soft spring conditions. Was 50 degrees up there that day.

Sledding

Kirkwood

Here are the runs from Kirkwood. The one that is really sunny and pretty mellow is qualifiers and the other is the finals. Really fun comp and ended up 17th. Would have been 10th if it was just for the final day.

ABS PACK

Here is the deployment of an ABS backpack. I am talking to camelbak and trying to get them to make something similar. The licensing is going to be available this year so you are going to see a lot more companies making these packs.

Telluride run 2

I went to Telluride last weekend for the free skiing world tour qualifiers and things did not go so well. I skied really bad the first day but made it to the finals. The second day I figured I had to do something. Here is the footage of me under rotating a back flip. Pretty funny stuff. However, I did get a concussion from this poor decision. There was no snow there and it was hard pack moguls with flat light. Not fun at all.

Little bit of an Avy problem around here

This is a picture out of the front door of my house in Wilson. We had a little bit of snow this fall and then it warmed up again. Most of the snow did not melt and now we have really bad avy conditions. This was just a natural slide and they are all over the Tetons. Stuff that has not slid around here probably will with the right trigger point so be careful out there.

Camelbak M.U.L.E. NV

If you Moto or mountain bike then take a look at this pack. It is from Camelbak and it is an awesome pack. You can fit a bike tube, pump, tire irons, extra goggles and all the other extras you need. At the bottom of the pack there is a rain poncho that pulls out to keep all your stuff dry. The back of the pack is super ventilated to allow air to reach your back. Its a smaller pack but can fit everything you need. The fit is so nice and it is a rugged pack. Perfect pack for ridding in good and bad weather.

Two Months out

Well I am two months out from surgery and my knee is doing amazing. I have full flexation and actually started to lift again today. Once again Dr. Steadman did a great job. I should be good to ski this summer, but first I need to figure out where to go. Winter has winded down in Jackson. All the snow down in the valley has melted, but its going to take a while for the stuff up high to go away.

2 Weeks out

After two weeks of crutching around I am now walking and ridding a bike. My knee feels great and have had no problems at all. Feels just like the other one did last year. Re-hab is going well and I am just trying to get as strong as possible to hopefully go down to south America this summer. Winter was cut short for me and so need to go skiing.

Surgery

This is a photo of last Monday waking up after surgery. Dr. Steadman was able to do another healing response on my ACL on my left knee. I also had some arthritis and meniscus issues that he took care off. So I am out for the season and re hab is going to be my life. I have to keep telling myself that things could have been a lot worse with that avalanche. I had been skiing on my knee after the event but it just did not feel right and sure enough it wasn't. Stay safe out there

Have to put the Steadman Hawkins clinic link under support. This is one of the best medical facilities in the world and they have been amazing.

Dam knees, Back to Vail

I guess that avalanche did more then I thought. I was down in Utah last week shooting with Will Wissman and some of the Levitation guys for a few days. The last day I landed a little back seat and my knee still does not feel right. I had X-Rays and an MRI here in Jackson and then sent it down to Steadman in Vail. I just got off the phone with them and it turns out that my ACL is pretty messed up along with some other things that could be going on. So as of right now I see him on Sunday and then have surgery on Monday. So 10 months, 2 avalanches and 2 blown knees. Not sure what is going on but hopefully I got all this out of the way. I will update again on Sunday when I find out more from the doc.

One week out

Here is what the back of my leg looks like after 7 days. It is just sore but keeps getting better everyday. Just a lot of black, blue and yellow. Thank god for knee braces and these two that dug me out. Toph has the helmet on and Taylor (younger brother) chef'n it up. Can't thank them enough.

Burried Alive for 4 Minutes

Yesterday myself my brother and one of my best friends Topher Plimpton where out sled skiing and I was caught in an avalanche at about 9,000 feet. We where on a north east facing slope that was about 30 to 35 degrees. The two of them skied half way down to a safe zone and then I was next to ski to them. On my way down my brother yelled slide and I looked up and saw it coming. I was within 5 feet of the safe zone and and I dove at a tree to try to hold on as the slide went through. No such luck. I was torn off the tree and carried 700 feet down smashing off rocks and trees. I lost both skis really really quick cause of all of the trees. When the slide stopped I was face down with my hand over my face buried 5 feet. It took topher and my brother 4 minutes to get my unburied. Needless to say that is extremely fast. I had passed out after 2 minutes but had 100% faith that these two would find me. Luckily the first thing that was uncovered was my head. Taylor kept my airway clear while Topher dug out the rest of my body. I lost both skis and they are still buried out there but we where able to snowmobile out of there after the incident. Few things came out of this event. One I will never ski without a helmet. Smith has a new helmet next year called the Maze and this helmet saved my life. There are 3 big dents in it but that helmet saved me from a concussion or possibly worse. The second is the Asterisk knee brace system. I know both knees would have been blown had I not been wearing them. I have bruises on my shins from the slide trying to hyper extend my knee. Those braces did not allow this to happen. Finally I will never ski with people that I do not have 100% trust in. I ski with Topher everyday and we know that if anything happens we will get to the other person. While I was buried I knew he would find me. I might be passed out but I knew he would get to me. So from here it is a few days off and just letting my body heal. Guess that's all for now. Be careful out there cause we are not out of this avy cycle.
